Brief History

Background

Fr. Faustino De Souza, Founder of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth at Sancoale after establishing several houses was constantly reminded by his sister Sr. Prisca to do something for his own village inspired to send the sisters to his own native village of Anjuna.

The Beginning

On the 3rd of June 1962 Fr. Founder accompanied by Sisters –Margaret as Superior Leonie & Francisca stepped into Anjuna to make Fr. Founder vision a reality. The sisters were kept in a house of Santa Mana where they stayed for some days.  On 8th June, the sisters had to shift to Mr. Valhe’s house.  On 24th June to Paula’s house.

The First Step

These work of the sisters found favour with the villagers and they were also encouraged by the Parish Priest of Anjuna, Fr. Alfred Araujo and of Vagator, Fr. Ethelvides Baptista.  Later Fr. Alvaro Pinto also encouraged their work.

As there was a group of young girls running a centre in the Parish and having sewing machined, the Parish Priest got the sisters to take charge of the sewing machine to teach the girls, some of whom became professionals.

Starting a School

After Liberation of Goa the government was encouraging schools and also there was a demand in the village for education.  Accordingly  the sisters started to get admissions and started  a school for the girls and also boys upto the age of 10. On 26th June 1962  The early years were difficult and the sisters had to shift to various houses.  However there was a lot of co-operation.  Students were studying in classes from pre-primary upto std VIII.  Sr. Rita was the First Principal of the School and Sr. Francisca the Superior. One of the first student Sr. Fausta joined the congregation

Upgrading

As the sisters were  already running four other schools and there was  shortage of personnel, Fr. Faustino asked his nephew Mr. Michael De Souza to take charge of the School.  Accordingly he was officially appointed Headmaster on 1st May 1965. On 29th Oct 1968 the Gaonkars of Anjuna held a meeting and  gave a plot of land to the convent on condition that they keep boys in the school.

From there on it was the upgrade the school to higher classes.  Each year a class was added.  There was plenty of co-operation from the Education Department and also the church.  Permission was given by Archbishop Raul Gonsalves  for co-education and the school was able to send up students for the S.S.C examination of the Pooona Board in March 1970, securing 100% results.

Additional Buildings

The Communidade of Anjuna at the earliest appeal from Fr. Faustino gave 6000 sq. mt. of land to St. Michael’s and the Foundation stone was laid  first building of 6 rooms was put up with aid from Propaganda Fide 15th August 1971.

Subsequently 2nd block in the year  14th February 1973. 3rd block was also started and was completed by April 1975. 4th block & Hall 1997

24th November 1984 was a red letter day in the annals of the institution when the statue of the Founder, Fr. Faustino De Souza was unveiled by his nephew Dr. Wilfred De Souza.

Activities & Progress

St. Michael’s had always a vision – prepared and stressed on by its Founder, Rev. Fr Faustino De Souza whose strong sense of direction and purpose – formed not only the sisters of the congregation but moulded those who came into the school be they students or staff competitions of various types were held with a view of giving students an opportunity to display talents – drawing competition, poetry, dance, singing were just a few.

By 1972, it began an Inter-School Elocution Competition.  At a time when there was a craze for such a competition, St. Michael’s inspite of not having the required infrastructure was able to attract speakers from every part of Goa.  As many as 40 students  from far and near represented their schools and the corridor of the school vibrated with eloquent speeches. To this day is an annual feature though now it curtails itself to only the society schools. On the sports front, the school went from strength to strength and over the years the school has been represented at taluka, district and even State level.

The need to improve keeps the school focused on catering to individual needs and providing a platform for students to shine.

Gratitude

St. Michael’s has in some ways preserved the original goal and purpose of Fr. Founder, looking back through these fifty years we can see the dedicated work of so many teachers and sisters, the co-operation of parents and the students of the early years.  God has looked after this institution.  We, therefore, thank God for all his blessing to bring St. Michael’s to what it is today.
